Azerbaijan - the Land of Fires! Azerbaijan - a miraculous country with its reach
natural resources, ancient culture, history and people, whose lifestyle
presents a unique and harmonious combination of the traditions and ceremonies of different cultures and civilizations.
Azerbaijan is a geographical name of the country. On the one hand this
name is linked with the population, which lived in this region for
thousand of years ago, and who were mostly fire-worshippers. Local
population considered that fire was their God and so they worshipped
the fire. "Azer"
means fire. The Turkic name "Azer" was used for this territory for a
long time. The word "Azerbaijan" originates from the name of an ancient
Turkish tribe, who resided in those territories.
Azerbaijan is one of the most ancient sites of humankind. The humankind

There is a place called Yanardag (blazing mountain) in Absheron and
thermal springs in some parts of Nakhichivan, Kelbejar, Masali,
Lenkoran, Babadag.
In Surakhani, there is an eternal fire place. From the ancient times the fire worshippers from remote places and even the Indian priests were coming to Absheron in search of fire and finding it here. They built their main temples here in Surakhani and Ateshgah.
There are more than 6 thousand historical monuments of architecture in
the territory of Azerbaijan. The natural climatic conditions of
Azerbaijan are also unique. As it is well known, 9 climatic zones out
of 11 exist in Azerbaijan.
There are picturesque natural landscapes, monuments of culture and
modern tourist complexes in Azerbaijan. The Khudat-Yalama seacoast with
the woods, seashores of Absheron and Lankaran is fine place for rest.
In these places there are fine sandy beaches with water temperature is
22-26°C steadily kept within five and more months that provides long
swimming season. The most attractive areas for Alpinism and winter
sports are Shamakhi and Gusar. Many kinds of animals and birds are
objects of license hunting, and in reserves they are very easy to see
and to take photo of. In particular, the Gizilagach reserve, where in
the winter months accumulates more than one million individuals of two
hundred kinds of birds of passage, is very convenient for this purpose.
In Azerbaijan there a number of health-resorts with spas that gives an
opportunity for treating of many illnesses yielding to natural therapy.
Most resorts with mineral spas are also the tourist centres. Nakhchivan
is especially rich with mineral sources; the only deposit of medical
oil in the world - Naftalan - is completely unique.
Baku and Absheron peninsula, Nakhchivan, Guba-Khachmaz, Sheki-Zagatala,
Lankaran-Astara regions, historical areas of Shirvan and Ganjabasar are
most attractive for tourists in Azerbaijan. The lovely nature of these
places, numerous ancient relics, wonderful ethnographical variety and
astonishing skills of the local craftsmen will leave an unforgettable
impression of Azerbaijan at its guests.
