Excursions of the mountains and valleys of Shirvan with babbling brooks
and granite blocks of different and unusual shapes, which are thrown
everywhere, like toys of a giant will let an unforgettable impression.
All conditions for an active rest are created in this region: from
walks on foot to an extreme ascent of mountain and frozen waterfall"s
climbing.
In environs of the Maraza settlement in one of the rocky canyons there
is two-storied Diri Baba Mausoleum (1402). This monument has always
attracted attention of travelers by its unusual appearance and halo of
mystical secret connected with numerous legends. Two little apertures
in the north wall lead into grotto carved in massif of rock.
Near Shamakhi the ruins of Gulistan fortress arc preserved, where
right, up to its death in 16th centure the palace of Shirvanshahs was.
Strong walls with numerous round and quadrangular towers surrounded the
territory of the fortress. Hacked through a rock long secret, passage 2
m wide and 2,5-3 m height led from the fortress to running in the
deepness of the canyon spring. Have passing round a narrow gully the
passage made several turnings rising steeply high with declivity
reaching 50°. The passage is provided with stairs craved in the rock
and assembled from big stones.
Existing from the 7th century the famous Lahyj settlement, located on
the bank of the Girdimanchay River on height of 1200 above the sea
level is well known. This lost in mountains small town is one of the
most famous handicraft centres of Azerbaijan. It is famed for
production of weapon and copper chased tableware since olden times.
Tableware and weapon of Lahyj masters was in big demand through all
Caucasus. And nowadays in spite of difficulties local craftsmen -
braziers, curriers, chasers, potters, smiths, papakhchi producing old
headdresses, incrustations and engravers in metal and wood continue the
work of their ancestors. |
